About UsPrimary Health Care refers to "essential health care" that is based on scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology, which make universal health care accessible to individuals and families in a community.
In other words, Primary Health Care is an approach to health beyond the traditional health care system that focuses on health equity-producing social policy.
Primary Health Care includes all areas that play a role in health, such as access to health services, environment and lifestyle.
Thus, primary health care and public health measures, taken together, may be considered as the cornerstones of universal health systems.The main objective of this department is to provide the qualitative primary health care services to the community.
Rendering maternal and child health care, prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases are the major components.Now, under the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, 44 Health Unit Districts are functioning.
Each Health Unit District is functioning under a technical and administrative control of one Deputy Director of Health Services.
Each Health unit District comprises of 30-40 Primary Health Centres on an average.The PHCs have been established at the rate of one per 30,000 rural population in plain areas and one per 20,000 population in hilly areas.
Each Primary Health Centre is functioning with minimum of two Medical Officers supported by a team of field health staff.
Under this Directorate, 1,806 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) are functioning, of which 422 PHCs are upgraded with 30 bedded ward and operation theatre.To carry out all national and state health programmes in urban areas, 460 Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) have been created.
To carry out public health activities in inaccessible and hilly areas and to serve the old age people, 416 Hospital on Wheels are functioning in 385 blocks.
Each Primary Health Centre comprises of 5 to 6 Health Sub-Centres on an average.
These have been established at the rate of one per 5000 rural population in plain areas and one per 3000 rural population in hilly areas.
To carryout field activities at village level, 8,713 Health Sub Centres (HSCs) are functioning each manned by one Village Health Nurse (VHN) and one Health Inspector.
All the National and State Health Programmes are being implemented successfully through these Primary Health Centres / Health Sub Centres.
